Watermelon Mint Granita

What in the world is granita?

Well, friends – I’m excited to tell you! If you’ve never heard of it or had it before, it’s a super simple frozen dessert reminiscent of shave ice (think of a ‘shaved’ snow cone) made from fruit. It’s cool, refreshing and a tad sweet, making an amazing end-of-summer treat!

In this version, I paired watermelon and lime juice with fresh mint because the flavors pair so well together, and watermelon is super fresh right now.

I also love how easy it is to make! You simply blend the ingredients together, transfer the mixture to a shallow pan and freeze it for about an hour. Once it’s almost completely frozen, you run a fork through it to ‘shave’ it, and voila! You have a fun treat the whole family will love.

Watermelon Mint Granita

A frozen watermelon, lime and mint dessert.



  • 3 pounds watermelon, peeled and cubed (about 8 cups)
  • Zest and juice of 1 medium lime
  • 56 fresh mint leaves
  • 1 Tbsp. granulated sugar (optional)



  1. Place the cubed watermelon, lime zest and juice, mint leaves and sugar (if using) in a blender. Blend until smooth.
  2. Transfer the mixture to a 9×13 baking dish. Place on a flat surface in the freezer for 60 minutes. Remove from the freezer and use a fork to break up the mixture into ‘shaved ice’. Scoop into dishes and serve immediately.


Cooking Tip: If the granita mixture has been in the freezer for more than 60 minutes and is rock hard, take it out of the freezer and let sit at room temperature for 30-60 minutes, then use the fork to bread up the mixture into ‘shaved ice’.
